Full-sized Spinning 76 Ball on eBay!
If you’ve been wondering, like we have, what’s become of the 76 Balls that are being pulled down from their poles, here’s where one of them is: being auctioned on eBay! The seller says it was removed from a Bakersfield race track two years ago. And of course if you win, you have to pick it up.
The Save the 76 Ball made some new friends in the media yesterday. Check out the podcast of petition writers Nathan and Kim in the last ten minutes of the BBC’s Up All Night Blog show, the Daily Telegraph article, and the piece in the deliciously-named Convenience Store/Petroleum Daily News.
We’re closing in on 900 signatures on the petition. Will it hit 1000 by the weekend?

I used to live in Canada and frequently travelled into the States and used to count these 76 balls as a kid on the journey across the USA. Please bring them back!!!

I moved to Dearborn, MI in 1976 and remember a “76” gas station built in 1976 near the new Fairlane Town Center Mall. I didn’t know the significance of the 76 at the time, I had just assumed that the ball would be changed ever year with the new year (77, 78, etc.). But it remained, and since I was a member of Garden City East High School class of ’76, it remained of significance to me. But I remember in 1998 when the “76” ball came down and was replaced with a “BP” sun logo the heartbreak it caused me. I don’t understand why they would get rid of a landmark like this. 🙁 -Phil Gregor
